Burbank Town Center Redevelopment

About the project

Consensus was retained by joint venture partners Crown Realty & Development and CAPREF Manager to announce plans to redevelop the Burbank Town Center mall and several outparcel into a revitalized “heart” of downtown Burbank. An increase in density would mean thousands of new residents and hotel occupants. However, the impacts over existing conditions would be negligible because the new development was replacing, in part, the most highly visited IKEA store in the U.S. Regardless, perception equals reality and nearly all land use projects face opposition no matter how greatly they improve the community.

Giving Neighbors a Taste of What Could Be

About the project

Even in the San Fernando Valley, mall capital of the world and home of the original “Valley Girl”, shopping centers are losing their luster. With the rise of e-commerce and behemoths like Amazon, the shopping center industry is retooling to regain its attraction with a focus on experience. For Westfield Fashion Square in Sherman Oaks, that draw is eight new restaurants. However, the San Fernando Valley and Sherman Oaks in particular is the home of something else, a well organized, highly-active community that vigilantly opposes any development that could potentially create traffic on their already congested streets.

Community Relations Services for the West Los Angeles VA Master Plan

About the project

When the VA Greater Los Angeles healthcare system called on Consensus to provide community relations services for the West Los Angeles VA Master Plan, we accepted the challenge to engage and facilitate dialogue around what were historically conflicted interests. Consensus worked to inspire stakeholders to weigh in on how 388 acres of land with a rich history – located among even richer financial interests in the middle of the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles – could be revitalized to thrive as a residential community for chronically homeless veterans.

Pershing Square Renew

About the project

Pershing Square Renew, a non-profit collaboration between government, community, and business leaders in Downtown L.A., was created to reimagine the heart of Los Angeles – Pershing Square – as a public space that enhances quality of life and establishes a sustainable, healthy, inclusive and economically viable city. In January 2015, Consensus began retooling the digital communications efforts for Pershing Square Renew. Within the first six months, we increased the social media following by over 50% and it has continued to grow. The team also developed a business digital engagement program, focused on featuring the small businesses near Pershing Square on social media to establish partnerships and generate goodwill. The organization completed a successful design competition, where world-class teams competed for the chance to reimagine Pershing Square and a design was selected. This process was well-documented throughout the L.A. media market and well received by the general public. It is now in pursuit of funding from public and private sources and Consensus will continue to provide support on engaging the public.

ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIATION

Consensus has directed and executed dozens of communications programs related to groundwater, soil and air contamination. We have handled all phases of this work, from serving as the first response team on the ground when initial contaminants are discovered all the way through the issuance of a “No Further Action” letter. We have designed and implemented public outreach strategies in coordination with local, regional, state and federal environmental regulators. Additionally, we have managed the myriad of community and communications issues related to installing treatment systems, injection and extraction wells, monitoring systems and more. We represent clients involved with Superfund sites and we have extensive experience developing strategies to address emerging vapor intrusion issues. We represent some of the largest companies in the world, who trust us because of our directly relevant experience, and then retain us over many years because we get results. We understand their priorities to minimize liabilities, use resources efficiently, and to protect human health.

About the project

Since 2003, Honeywell International, the New Jersey-based diversified technology and manufacturing giant, has worked with Consensus for strategic communications and community relations programs for more than a dozen remediation sites throughout the West coast. Working closely with government regulators and Honeywell’s legal, environmental and corporate communications teams, Consensus handles outreach to community stakeholders, property owners, residents, commercial tenants, elected officials, city staff and local media. Consensus also works closely with oversight agencies including DTSC, CALEPA, AQMD, RWQCB, and OEHHA.

Strategic Communications &
Bilingual Community Relations

About the project

At the direction of the L.A. Regional Water Quality Control Board, Black & Decker led the environmental cleanup of the former Price Pfister site in Pacoima to allow its redevelopment into a retail/commercial center. At the outset, community stakeholders questioned Water Board officials about measures being taken to ensure public health. Among other issues, residents cited concerns regarding dust, noise and odor. Consequently, the Board halted work until community concerns were addressed. Consensus assisted the company in strategic communications and bilingual (English/Spanish) community relations as part of a program to expedite remediation efforts. Consensus implemented a community outreach program including door-to-door walks, bilingual information materials, a phone hotline and regular community meetings in coordination with the Water Board and local elected officials. Consensus mobilized supporters to urge the Water Board for the continuation of the site cleanup effort, resulting in a unanimous decision for the work to proceed.
